Poseidon Sciences and SHMRC:  Marine paint testing on small wooden boats in South India. These wooden boats are used for daily fishing and available for periodic evaluation of the antifouling performance of wood coatings in a tropical setting of continuous fouling.

Poseidon and Tropical Pesticides Research Institute-Tanzania.  Collaboration between the two organizations began on malaria biocontrol in temporary pools using annual killifish, which can survive drought by undergoing hibernation as embryos in the dry substrate similar to mosquitoes.  This convergent evolution offers a unique opportunity to use annual killifish as a tool in the eradication of the immature stages of mosquitoes in temporary ponds.

2009

Launch of subsea test facility at 30-45 meter depths to evaluate the biofouling in deeper waters.  The subsea environment has a different condition of fouling and pressure compared to shallow submergence.  Coatings for pipeline and oil rigs require a more rigorous testing to meet these unique conditions.

2009

Poseidon and SHMRC:  Research program to look for natural products from marine environment as a part of collaborative effort with academe and  industry.

2006

Menthol propyleneglycol carbonate eliminates lice  in hair. Press release published in Medical New Today describes the epidemic of head lice due to resistance to conventional chemicals and the advantage of menthol propyleneglycol carbonate as a nontoxic deterrent.

2006

PRESS RELEASE.  MR-08 shows superiority to DEET in repelling sandflies, the vector of leishmaniasis.

2006

On the potential of menthol propyleneglycol carbonate in wood protection against termites.

2006

Marine antifouling programs at Poseidon Sciences and SHMRC.  The newsletter reviews current operations in biofouling testing at various locations.

Rediscovery of seagrape Caulerpa lentillifera in the Gulf of Mannar and its mariculture.  Once thought extinct in the Gulf, the seagrape, also referred to as umi budo, is high value seaweed for food use in Japan now found in the east coast of South India. Mariculture technologies were developed for this seaweed for later commercialization as an export commodity.

2009

Barnacles, Darwin and marine paint research.  The article celebrates Charles Darwin's 150th anniversary of writing the "Origins of  Species" and Poseidon's odyssey in marine paint sciences.  This article was an expanded version of  Poseidon's 2009 Newsletter.

This article is also published in Chinese and can be accessed HERE.
